Happy Working Sydney Harbour

Happy Working Sydney Harbour

Interview with Anne-Marie Poels who has worked for Sydney Harbour Escapes for the summer season.

AT: What brings you to Australia and how did you get to work for Sydney Harbour Escapes?

I am from the Netherlands and I was working there as a Project Manager and I thought, what am I doing in the office? I need to be on the water! So I went to Australia thinking that I would like to do something with sailing. In Melbourne, I met a girl who had just been working with Sydney Harbour Escapes who said that it would be a great job for me. Soon after, I got a job as a deckhand on Dreamtime Girl and it is my best job ever. Way better than being in the office!

AT: What do you do aboard Dreamtime Girl?

I work as a deckhand. Dreamtime Girl is a 50-foot sailing catamaran. We pick up clients at different wharves and docks, I help the skipper with the lines and the fenders and I assist with anchoring and mooring. On charter, together with the hostess Cath, we make sure everyone has their drinks, serve the food, we keep the boat clean and generally make sure that everyone has a good time.

AT: From an international visitor’s perspective, can you share your impressions of Sydney Harbour?

Sydney Harbour is really great. It is made up of little bays and beaches. I have never seen this in Europe and the Netherlands. You can cruise around and every day see a new little bay and beaches. I think it is the best experience ever. It is one of the most beautiful harbours in the world I believe.

AT: What suggestions would you give Sydney visitors for the best things to see on Sydney Harbour?

I would definitely recommend that you go out on the water, as when you don’t do that, you miss out on a very important part of Sydney. It is very different being on your own private charter boat compared to being out on a public tourist ferry. You go to out of the way places and you experience the rich water life there. Every day is beautiful. Have a swim and enjoy.

AT: I know that you have had a chance to go out on Sydney Harbour for some special events. Can you tell us about your experiences of being out on Sydney Harbour on a boat for special event days?

I was on the boat on Sydney Harbour working on Boxing Day. We were in the best spot to see the maxi boats in the famous Sydney to Hobart sailing race. It was really impressive to see the maxi yacht sailors tacking up close. We followed the yachts to the heads, which was amazing to see. Then we spent a nice afternoon anchored, the guests were swimming and dancing, we had a barbecue, and it was great! Another really impressive occasion was of course New Year’s Eve on Sydney Harbour. Again we had an excellent spot, (next to David Allen- the big boss of Microsoft). I also was on the harbour for Australia Day. Our charter guests had lots of fun with all the Australia Day activities going on.

AT: Is there anything else that you would like to share?

I think Sydney Harbour Escapes has a great team. I really like working here. I have had a lot of fun. The best thing is that there are always lots of people on board and they are happy to be on the water. I really like being with people who are happy. Thank you. I feel lucky that I could do this.

Anne-Marie, it has been a pleasure for us to have you working with us for the summer season. It has been fantastic. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for working with your heart and soul and being part of our happy team.
